When New Team Members Pack It Wrong, It Is Rarely the Team
There’s a phrase you hear time and again in shipping operations: “The new hires are packing it wrong.” It sounds like a staffing problem, a lack of experience, or a need for training. In most cases, that’s not true. If a package can be packed incorrectly, that says more about the packaging than it does about the person.
The error shows up at the team, but forms in the design
A packing error becomes visible where the packing happens, at the table, with the person finishing the shipment. It is often caused much earlier, in the question of how many ways there are to close this packaging at all. If a package allows several variants and only one is correct, the error is a matter of time. Not because the team is careless, but because the design is what makes the attention necessary in the first place.
Good systems remove the need for behavior
A reliable system does not rely on everyone doing everything right at all times. It is built so that the correct way is the obvious one. Applied to packaging, that means the best packaging ideally allows only one sensible way to be packed. Then it takes less training, less checking and less experience to reach a reliable result. The reliability sits in the construction, not in the daily form of the person at the table.
