Europe's packaging dilemma

The EU has ambitious goals: by 2030, all packaging should be recyclable and packaging waste should be reduced by 5%, but the reality is quite different. 186.5 kilograms of packaging waste per person, 36 kilograms of which is plastic: that is the status quo in Europe (as of 2022). The new report from the Innovation News Network shows that the road to a circular economy is rocky. But this is exactly where we at SUPASO come in.

Packaging waste at record levels. What is going wrong?

The demand for fast, convenient products is booming. E-commerce, takeaway, single-use packaging: they are all driving up the mountains of waste. At the same time, the recycling infrastructure is lagging behind, complex materials are difficult to separate, and much packaging still ends up being incinerated or in landfills.

The EU is responding with clear targets:

  • 100% recyclable packaging by 2030

  • 5% reduction in packaging waste (by 2030)

  • Ban on certain single-use packaging from 2030

  • 30% recycled content in plastic packaging

But how do we get there?

Our answer: Think regionally and circularly.

At SUPASO, we rely on packaging solutions made from 100% recycled paper that can be returned to the cycle after use. No plastic, no foam, no compromise on function.

Some of our solutions in use:

  • For temperature-controlled shipping in the e-food sector

  • For fresh or frozen products, completely without styrofoam

  • Completely recyclable in the waste paper cycle

The packaging of the future must not only be functional, but also socially acceptable and environmentally sound. We demonstrate that this is possible. The political goals have been set. Now we need solutions that are scalable, pragmatic, and immediately applicable.
